Valentine Day
By Jayanti Krishnan
By Jayanti Krishnan
Valentine Day is celebrated every year on 14th Feb. This day people show their appreciation towards their loved ones. They take their loved ones for a romantic dinner. Some people also propose or get married on this day. They exchange greeting cards, chocolates and flowers particularly red roses with their loved ones. It is also a time to appreciate friends in some social circles and cultures. For example, Valentine's Day in Finland refers to “Friend's day”, which is more about remembering all friends rather than focusing solely on romance.
Having said the above how many of us know the history behind this day? Why this day is celebrated as Valentines day? Let me take you back to the third century with an oppressive Roman emperor and a humble Christian Martyr. The emperor was Claudius II. The Christian was Valentinus. Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods, and had made it a crime punishable by death to associate with Christians. He had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentinus felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. He also followed the christ. Because of these two reasons Claudius II imprisoned him.
Valentinus had some saintly abilities and one of them granted him the power to heal people.During his last few days of imprisonment the jailor felt that he is a man of wisdom and knowledge and he could bring his daughter Julia to him for lessons, as she was blind by birth. Julia was a pretty young girl with a quick mind. Valentinus read stories of Rome's history to her. He described the world of nature to her. He taught her arithmetic and told her about God. She saw the world through his eyes, trusted his wisdom, and found comfort in his quiet strength. One day Julia asked him if God really hears our prayers, Valentinus said yes so they both quietly sat and prayed together and suddenly there was a radiant light in the prison and Julia got her eyesight back.On the eve of his death he wrote a letter to Julia to stay close to God and signed it" from your valentine." It is said that Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship.Hence on each February 14th Saint Valentinus messages of affection, love, and devotion are exchanged around the world."
There is another side to why this day is celebrated as valentines day. The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February, officially the start of their springtime.
It's thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married.
Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St. Valentinus too.
Hence Every year millions of people are eager to celebrate their relationship and the joy of their togetherness through delicious cuisines. All hotels , resturants, market places are deocrated with various symbols of love.
So let us all carry forward this age old tradition and pass on the message of love and affection to one and all and make this world a better place to live and bring peace and harmony.

Teachers Open a Window to the World
By Jayanti Krishnan
By Jayanti Krishnan
Teachers are inevitable part of our lives. They play a significant role in the formative years of our development, in one way or the other. When we are young, our teachers play the role of 'second parent', taking care of us and showing us the right path to success. When we grow older, they help us achieve our targeted goals and guide us in such a way that life's toughest challenges seem easier to accomplish. They prove to be the moral guide for us. They recognize the talents of their students, sharpen it, and give it the proper shape, which can prove productive. Since times immemorial, Indians have respected and idolized their teachers and they used to call them GURUS. They were, are and will be the guiding light in shaping our lives.
Teachers' day is a day that is celebrated to appreciate and honour teachers for their contribution to society as well as imparting knowledge, guiding and shaping the minds and careers of students. This day is also celebrated as Teachers' Appreciation day and National Teachers' day.
The celebration of this day took roots in the 20th Century. In India, teachers' day is celebrated on 5th September, birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. who was a thinker, philosopher, academician, diplomat, scholar but above all a teacher. . As a matter of fact, when his students and friends asked him for the permission to celebrate his birthday, it was he who asked them to celebrate the day as Teacher's Day, honouring the efforts of teachers across the country.
On this day children take the place of their teachers , dress up like them and conduct classes. They put up cultural shows in honour of their teachers, give gifts, cards and flowers to them and make this day very special and memorable one for all off them. Outstanding teachers are also given prizes for their contribution in the development of schools and bringing good results from students.
Teachers' Day around the world
20 countries celebrate a common Teachers' Day on October 5: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, Macedonia, Maldives, Mauritius, Republic of Moldova, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Kuwait, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Serbia and United Kingdom.
11 countries celebrate a common Teachers' Day on February 28: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, UAE and Oman.
I would like to end this note on teachers day with a quote
“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” – Albert Einstein

Raksha Bandhan (Knot of protection)
Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit (ancient language of India) literally means “The tie or knot of protection”. It is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond of love and duty between brothers and sisters. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of August. On this day a sister ties rakhi (sacred thread) on her brother’s wrist. This symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well being. In return the brother ritually pledges to protect her under all circumstances and gives her a gift. It is followed by eating sweets and other delicacies. Historically a queen of a state in India had sent a rakhi to the supreme ruler, when her state was threatened by neighboring state. The supreme ruler, though politically on the opposite side of the queen, upheld the honor of Rakhi by helping the queen to ward off her enemies.

The Schoolmaster
Let’s say I’m schoolmaster Kanai,
The kitten is my pupil today,
I don’t use the cane on him, mother,
It’s just a twig that I use to play.
He’s always late for class,
Never interested in the lesson,
Raises his right paw and yawns
When I say, “Here, listen”
He neglects his studies all day,
Spends all his time in play.
I say, “M N O P Q”
He only says, “Mew, mew.”
I explain the books to him,
As much, mother, as I’m able,
“You should never steal food,
Be good, like Gopal of the fable”
All I say goes in vain,
He listens to nothing at all,
Let him come across a fish,
None of this he’ll recall.
And sparrows – if he spies one,
He’ll leave the class and run.
I keep saying, “M N O P Q”
He mischievously says, “Mew.”
Repeatedly to him I say,
“At school time you must learn.
Play to your heart's content,
Once school is over and done.”
He’ll act as if he’s a good boy,
Glance at my face looking bland,
Every word that I said,
He’ll pretend to understand.
Whenever he gets a chance,
He’ll vanish from sight at once.
I say, “M N O P Q”
He only says, “Mew, mew.”

Ode To My Mother
My love for my mother knows no bounds
Starting from the very sounds,
I heard for months in her womb everyday,
Her 'sound' advice, still shows me the way.
She gave me life and so much more,
For that I am grateful to my core.
Her sacrifices for me, I will always remember,
Her love for me forever glows like an ember.
Mother's Day is a special day,
To honor moms in a special way.
I wish though it wasn't just one day in a year,
That we get to thank our mommy dear.
Let us try and make every day sweeter,
For this wonderful lady who made our lives better.
A phone call, a visit, a quick note,
Will all go a long way as you she does dote!
Let's show our appreciation more and I bet,
Our children will learn from the example we set.
What goes around does come around my friend,
More love you spread, the more of it you'll have at the end!!

I AM
I am what I am a reflection within
I am a heart filled with happiness
An eye wet with tears
And a soul serene at peace
I am not what the world may see

But all that exist within me
Makes me human
Sets me free to be

A WING & A PRAYER
Under the wing an angel, we feel protected
Through prayers to God, we feel connected
Peace is said to be offered on the wings of a dove
Prayers can bring peace along with hope, faith and love
Wings of a jet plane provide steady flight
I pray your remain steady and strong through this fight
Butterflies have wings to fly playfully free
And free from this monster is what I pray you'll soon be
Birds spread their wins as they may leave their nest
We're spreading our prayers that you'll always be Blessed.
